Sophos Firewall XG Series EOL and XGS Migration
News|by Leanne Bevan|11 December 2024
The Sophos XG Series hardware appliances will reach their end of life (EOL) on 31 March 2025.
Now is the time to upgrade to the XGS Series Sophos Firewall
Sophos recommends that you migrate to the XGS series.
Reasons to upgrade
- The continued use of an EOL or unsupported product can impact your compliance status (particularly in case of a breach).
- It may affect their ability to renew or claim on your cyber insurance policy.
- Once support expires or the product reaches its EOL, uninterrupted operation is not guaranteed, and some functionality may no longer be available.
- Cost savings if you upgrade early.
What’s included in the Sophos XGS Series
The XGS Series hardware brings the Xstream Architecture in Sophos Firewall OS to a whole new level. It has programmable hardware and FastPath for trusted or verified applications and processes, which could otherwise throttle performance. The XGS Series brings enhanced performance, improved threat protection, and expanded connectivity.
Plus, the recently launched Sophos Firewall v21 adds key features your customers will love:
- Support for third-party threat feeds
- VPN, routing, and high availability enhancements
- Streamlined management
- Let’s Encrypt certificate support
- Also includes features such as any-to-any backup/restore and zero-touch deployment
The new XGS Series desktop models offer industry-leading performance, power efficiency, and an excellent price per protected megabit per second (PPPMbps)—delivering incredible value for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and branch offices. Whether your customers are upgrading for better performance, high-speed connectivity, or the whisper-quiet operation of the fanless models, the XGS Series is a sound investment.
Sophos Firewall v21
Importantly, Sophos Firewall v21 is only available on XGS hardware (and for virtual, software, and cloud deployments), making the upgrade essential to take full advantage of these innovations.

Migration information
Sophos has introduced a new functionality for early renewal transactions (only) that will grant customers early access to the licence purchased on their XGS appliance. This free early access period on XGS will start from the date the order is processed and run concurrently with the remaining term of the XG licence, ensuring a seamless transition.
This streamlined process, with just a single licence key, allows you to proactively refresh your security infrastructure at a time that suits your schedule and resources, unlocking the advanced capabilities of the XGS platform without the typical logistical and operational hurdles.
This all comes at no extra cost, has no impact on the remaining term of the XG licence, and does not require any change to what you order.
Sophos has created a video that describes the overlapping licence functionality in more detail:

The following are not eligible for the overlapping entitlement:
- New, Amend & Extend, on-time or late renewals
- Transitions from SG to XGS or XGS to XGS
- MSP Flex XG to XGS transitions
