The JetBrains State of Developer Ecosystem in 2023 report is out, featuring insights from over 26,000 global respondents. For seven years, JetBrains has tracked tech trends, covering programming languages, tools, frameworks, education, and developer lifestyles.
Key findings
Programming language trends:
- JavaScript remains the most popular language, but its use is declining in favor of TypeScript.
- Rust is the only language to see a significant increase in popularity.
- Scala, Go, and Kotlin are the top-paying languages.
Demographics:
- There is a gender gap in the industry, with only 5% of developers being women.
Communication:
- Mobile app usage for communication tools has dropped.
Emerging trends:
- AI is becoming increasingly popular among developers, with 77% using ChatGPT and 46% using GitHub Copilot.
- However, 59% express concerns about AI tools, especially regarding security.
- Developers are also interested in mental health, with 73% having experienced burnout, likely due to more employees returning to the office.
