Microsoft Windows 11 Announcement
News|25 June 2021
Microsoft has announced the advent of Windows 11 – “Powerful for employees. Consistent for IT. Secure for all.”
Microsoft has placed an emphasis on Windows 11 being designed for the new world of hybrid working. Having developed a number of UI features that will “reduce employee cognitive load” like Snap Layout and Snap Groups, as well as deeper integration with Teams, there is much to like about this new OS.
Windows 10 will remain supported until 14 October 2025 and any customers using long term service releases will continue to be supported through to the end of their published end of support dates.
Based on the same foundation as Windows 10, Windows 11 will support the same management tools that you currently use. It also boasts guaranteed application compatibility backed by App Assure.
What’s the upgrade path?
Most devices currently available to purchase will be upgradeable to Windows 11. There will be an option to upgrade, clean install, or reimage Windows 10 devices to move to Windows 11. For Windows 7 devices that meet hardware requirements, you will need to clean install or reimage to go directly to Windows 11.
What does Windows 11 mean for developers?
Microsoft has placed emphasis on the new Microsoft Store. There will be greater support for existing app types with a new BYO revenue share model, Amazon App store integration, and support for Android apps. Microsoft has also announced new features for native Windows apps (including Teams) and the refreshed Windows 11 UI.
