Secure Our World
#BeCyberSmart
Every October we celebrate Cyber Security Awareness Month and help you become more aware of cyber threats and how you and your employees can be more cyber smart.
The theme for 2025 is "Stay safe online"
The four focus areas this year are:
Password management
Use multi-factor authentication
Recognise and report phishing
Update your software regularly
Why is cyber security so important?
Gov.uk reports that 50% of businesses and 32% of charities report having experienced some form of cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months
Gov.uk also found that the most common type of breach or attack is phishing (84% of businesses and 83% of charities). This is followed, to a much lesser extent, by others impersonating organisations in emails or online (35% of businesses and 37% of charities) and then viruses or other malware (17% of businesses and 14% of charities).
Cyberattacks are more complex and frequent. The amount of sensitive data an organisation holds is continuously increasing, which means regulations and cyber security frameworks require businesses to have more security controls in place.
Now more than ever, it’s vital for businesses to have a multi-layered security strategy.
Our four focus areas
Password management
Password managers are an efficient and secure way for employees to manage many passwords. You only need to remember one password to securely gain access to all your login details in one place.
IT managers and admins can implement them for teams and individuals and manage the access and policies for use.
Multi-factor authentication
Use multi-factor authentication (MFA) within your Microsoft and other solutions to protect your accounts. MFA requires two or more forms of verification before granting access. Instead of relying solely on a password, you might also need a code sent to your mobile, a fingerprint scan, or approval via an app. This layered approach makes it far more difficult for cybercriminals to breach your accounts, even if they obtain your password. MFA helps protect sensitive data, reduces the risk of identity theft, and gives you greater confidence when accessing online services.
Recognising and reporting phishing
Phishing is a form of cyberattack where criminals impersonate trusted sources - often via email, text, or fake websites - to trick you into revealing sensitive information like passwords, bank details, or login credentials. By spotting phishing attempts early, you help protect your organisation from data breaches, financial loss, and reputational damage. When employees are trained to recognise suspicious messages and report them, it strengthens the company’s overall security posture. Businesses can defend against phishing with solutions such as email filtering, multi-factor authentication, endpoint protection, and regular security awareness training to reduce risk and build a culture of vigilance.
Update your software regularly
Keeping your software up to date is essential for protecting your devices and data. When you install updates, you’re applying the latest security patches that fix known vulnerabilities. Without them, you’re leaving the door open to cyber threats.
Patch management solutions help automate this process, ensuring updates are applied consistently across systems. This reduces the risk of breaches, improves system performance, and helps you stay compliant with security standards. By staying on top of updates, you’re actively defending your digital environment and maintaining the reliability of your tools and services.
