School Closes Due to Ransomware Attack
News|by Leanne Bevan|12 September 2024
It has been reported that Charles Darwin School in Kent has had to close its doors to students and staff while they sort out a severe cyber incident.
The school suffered a ransomware attack and is working with the ICO to investigate the issue and discover what data has been compromised.
What is ransomware?
NCSC defines ransomware as a type of malicious software that blocks access to a user's system or data until a ransom is paid. It usually works by encrypting files, making them unusable until a decryption key is provided by the attacker. Attackers will also likely threaten to publish data if payment is not made. To counter this, you should take measures to minimise the impact of data theft.
Whatever you do though, don't pay the ransom; paying the ransom may encourage more attacks and doesn't guarantee that you'll get your data back.
How can you protect your organisation from a ransomware attack?
Use a wide range of cyber security solutions to bolster your protection. For instance, implement security awareness training for staff and students (so they can spot and report suspicious activity), use endpoint detection and response tools to catch and respond to threats, or use a managed service if you don't have the resources or expertise to manage it yourself. It is also important to back up and store your data in multiple places, and use firewalls. Patch management will also ensure all software is up-to-date and free from vulnerabilities. Plus, penetration testing services can regularly check for any vulnerabilities across your organisation and highlight areas where you need to improve your security defence.
