The Big UK PSTN Switch Off: Your Questions Answered
News|8 March 2023
You may have already heard that the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) will be fully closed down by 2025.
There are around 2.4 million businesses in the UK and whilst the largest firms have been steadily upgrading over the last few years, roughly 33% of larger firms still operate on PSTN and 70% of UK businesses still have a landline.
If your business falls into these categories, then the UK 2025 switch off will have consequences for your operations.
We’ve compiled the below FAQ’s to help answer any questions you may have.
What is PSTN?
PSTN in the UK is the legacy analogue phone line and broadband connection network across the UK. This is the system that has been in general use since the late 1800s.
Using underground copper wires, this platform has provided businesses and households alike with a reliable means to communicate with anyone in the UK and around the world for several generations.
The phones themselves are known by several names, such as PSTN, landlines, Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS), or fixed-line telephones.
Why is PSTN ending?
PSTN struggles to keep up with the pace of communications and data transfer in today’s world – it’s simply not fit for purpose and is too old.
What will replace PSTN?
The main contender to replace PSTN is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). VoIP enables communication and collaboration over the internet and uses your existing internet connection to make calls, eliminating the need for a landline.
There is no need for a complicated on-site installation because calls connect directly to your broadband and you'll be able to do away with purchasing a handset for every employee as they can download an app on to their device instead.
One of the best examples of VoIP is Microsoft Teams.
When is PSTN ending?
PSTN is switching off at the end of December 2025 and being completely withdrawn from service. There is no gentle phase-out currently planned so it’s best to start preparing for the switch-off as soon as possible.
