Windows 7 ESU – dates for your diaries
News|7 January 2021
Microsoft has been talking about the end of support for Windows 7 for years. Back in 2018, Microsoft announced a paid service for Extended Security Updates (ESU) that would offer additional updates for Windows 7 Professional and Enterprise for up to three years after the end of extended support – we are now a third of the way through this three-year window.
If you purchased the 2020 ESU, this runs out on 12 January 2021 and you’ll need to either upgrade to Windows 10 or buy another year of support for Jan 2021 to Jan 2022.
If this is news to you and you didn’t purchase the initial ESU for 2020 and still need it for 2021 you have to purchase both the 2020 and 2021 ESU. With the three-year deadline looming, this is a good time to start planning your update to Windows 10. The price for ESU will only increase year on year and purchasing Windows 10 on CSP is cheaper than the year 2 update by 50%.
The coverage periods for Windows 7 ESU products are as follows:
- Windows 7 Extended Security Updates 2020: 14 January 2020 – 12 January 2021
- Windows 7 Extended Security Updates 2021: 13 January 2021 – 11 January 2022
- Windows 7 Extended Security Updates 2022: 12 January 2022 – 10 January 2023
Can’t upgrade to Windows 10 straight away? You can purchase your Windows 7 ESU through Grey Matter to stay protected.
